Ernest Retzel has been working in computational genomics and bioinformatics for more than 15 years, and was originally trained in both microbiology and biochemistry. He has been Director of the University of Minnesota Center for Computational Genomics and Bioinformatics, and is presently pursuing research activities full-time. His work has been focused in the agri-critical areas of legumes and forest trees, addressing issues of data annotation, database interoperability, data mining, and distributed computing. His work is supported by USDA and NSF grants, as well as support from private enterprises. He has participated in CGIAR, NSF and USDA panels addressing the legumes and bioinformatics, participates in several advisory boards, and worked to develop the structure of NSF Plant Genome Research Program 2003-2008, as sponsored by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences / National Research Council.
