AbstractForage grasses are very important to modern agriculture and could be used as substitutes for grain feeds, which accounts for nearly 35% of the total grain production in China annually. The current development of genomics in model plants and possible applications of cloning essential genes that control quality traits of forage grasses (including lignin and cellulose, soluble carbohydrates, proteins and vitamins, proanthocyanidins and flavonoids) are reviewed in detail. The present status, perspectives, existing problems and possible solutions for quality improvement of forage grasses using biotechnology are also discussed.
