Households and Markets : Strategy Segmentation and Domains

Strategy Segmentation and Domains

The general notion of development domains utilized by HarvestChoice is one of delineating geographic areas within which the likely occurrence of specific patterns of development, livelihood, or intervention impact would be expected to be broadly similar. Development domains are therefore a means of segmenting geographies within and across countries in ways that are useful for policy, strategy and investment planning purposes. There is a long and rich history of theoretical work relating location and spatial variability in land quality general utility of this approach was derived from empirical studies in Central America and the East African Highlands conducted by IFPRI and it’s partners.

As we develop these complementary means of analysis and presentation of HarvestChoice information in a spatial context, we provide an example of the application of the development domain concept to the formulation of a new agricultural research and development strategy for Eastern and Central Africa in which several HarvestChoice scientists participated.
