Topic

Proof of Concept Workshop on the Regional Modeling of Biotic Constraints for Integration in a Strategic Crop Simulation and Economic Evaluation Framework

The goal of the meeting is to test, refine and further elaborate a method by which the impact of key pests, with regard to the productivity of cropping systems of relevance to the poor in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, can be assessed in a regional economic evaluation framework. While one goal is to apply a consistent approach across countries, another is for the individual spatial units of analysis for which pest impacts are assessed to be as detailed as possible – thus requiring an explicitly spatial approach. The general notion is that mapped representations of the likely incidence and severity of pests – both individually and in combination – might be linked, largely through tacit knowledge/expert opinion, to estimates of the associated yield losses. Such estimates can be compared with available empirical observations for further validation. These data layers will in turn be linked to the other HarvestChoice data/analytical components of crop distribution (SPAM) and crop yield simulation.
